Mal'aria 2010: dossier Legambiente points the finger at the factories

From Italian journal

The most popular Italian environmental association rattles off the disturbing numbers of pollution and organize a national campaign for the prevention of damage to health Emissions harmful to defend the right of our lungs, to breathe clean air. "For many of us the emergency smog is a daily reality" Legambiente say. In city traffic the "pots spewing carbon monoxide, lead, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, benzene, fine." Nothing new under the 'hood' that hangs over cities. The association, however, underlines the problem exacerbates in some specific areas of our country if we add more chemicals, toxic, carcinogenic, and in some cases, emitted from industrial sources.

The problem, of course, is not limited to dust. Although ozone in the summer has seen record levels, if it is estimated that by January 1, 2010 enter the limit for the protection of human health with a ceiling of 120 micrograms per cubic meter not to be exceeded more than 25 days in a year. It appeared that 32 of the 50 cities monitored fail to meet this limit and that eight towns in the Po Valley are positioned in the top ten for exceeding the force of law. "There are many sources of emissions that daily discharges large quantities of air pollutants," reads the document that indicates the factories as a prime suspect. The main causes of air pollution, in fact, are represented by their own industry and production of energy "responsible for 26% of PM10 emissions [that the material in the form of microscopic particles in the atmosphere], 23% of NO2 [nitrogen peroxide ipoazotide], 79% of SOx [due to ship emissions] and 34% of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons compared to the national total. A poisonous cocktail
this must be added the contribution of transport, especially road that competes for 22% to total emissions of PM10, NO2 and 50% to 45% CO and 55% of benzene compared to the national total " .

The landscape painted by Legambiente is worrying for the little that you can feel the mist behind. Possible, however, that there are solutions for cleaning up the city Mal'aria? It seems so, and the recipes are illustrated in the report that tells us that we have "at least two interventions that can be done without the need to commit substantial financial resources. You first need to "ensure the surface public transport can improve the flow as much as possible by extending the network of lanes" with the consequent removal of space to cars and real competitiveness of the bus compared to private vehicles. To this should be added the adoption of a congestion charging for the most congested areas in order to reduce traffic jams, adjust the speed of traffic, improving the efficiency of public transport and reduce emissions. They looked like two simple tips be implemented if it was not "overcome the political objections, conclude from Legambiente," and find a fair market price for a very, very poor (urban space), which until now has been 'offered' free of charge to motorists' .
